Best Soloist at Denby

Sun 25th Jun 2017

On Sunday 25th June we went to defend our title as Denby Potteries Champion 2016.

As far as the prizes go the band did not manage to retain our title, which went this year to the Leicester Co-Op band. We did however, with all thanks to Carol, win the Best Soloist Award which the adjudicator commented on Carol's fine sound and beautiful playing saying the horn really suited her (which we all knew already of course!). Congratulations to Carol on a well deserved award!

Our programme started with Paul Lovatt Cooper's fanfare-esque piece "Horizons" which was played with the band in a fanfare formation, trombones to the back and cornets flanking each side. Our second trombone player, Steve Sinclair, and repiano player, Stu Bryan led a choreographed performance of Libertango from the front of the band. Carol Smith then took to the stage to play the beautiful horn solo "Iona" which she played with taste and aplomb. A change of mood was in order, so the performance moved to a fantastic arrangement of the tune Shenandoah in "Mid all the traffic". Before things got too sombre the trombone section stood up to perform a trio version of the Acrobat written by Keith Leonard. The performance was dedicated to trombone player Stephen Sykes who is currently suffering with Lymphoma and trying to raise awareness and gain support for his condition. (For more information search Stephens journey on facebook or google). Our programme was then rounded off with the very famous, Bach's Toccota in D Minor which really hit the spot.
