Midlands Regional Championships 2024

We’ve been a little quiet in public lately, not because nothing has been happening, but we’ve been very busy working away behind closed doors. We’ve been working hard in our preparation for this year’s Midlands Regional Contest, this year to be held at the Corby Business Academy next weekend on Saturday 3rd March.

The contest is one of the biggest in the brass band calendar as it is the contest which places which section brass bands compete in. Promotions and relegations are decided on the aggregation of three years of results. We currently have a rather mixed bag of results with a very low placing in 2022 and a 4th place in 2023. This leaves us fairly middle in the table, fairly safe from both relegation and promotion. We are hoping to put in an impressive performance and leave us in a strong position for a promotion push next year.

The test piece for this year’s contest is “High Peak”, a rhapsody for brass band composed by the eminent Eric Ball. This piece, like the rugged landscape it’s named after, evokes grandeur, challenge, and triumph.

Eric Walter John Ball (1903–1989) was a prolific British composer, conductor, and Salvation Army officer. His musical journey began early, and he became a prominent figure in the brass band world. “High Peak” was composed in 1954 and remains one of Ball’s most celebrated works. The title pays homage to the Peak District, a stunningly scenic region in northern England known for its rolling hills, dramatic peaks, and rugged beauty. Ball’s inspiration likely came from the breathtaking vistas, ever-changing weather, and the spirit of adventure associated with climbing the High Peak mountains.

Vision: The opening section, titled “Vision,” transports listeners to the base of a great mountain. Imagine standing below, gazing upward at the ever-changing light, colors, and shifting clouds. The music reflects contemplation, awe, and anticipation.

Aspiration: In “Aspiration,” we join the climber on their journey. Planning and preparation are essential. The music conveys a bustling, busy feeling—a sense of purpose and determination. The climber readies themselves for the ascent, mapping out the path ahead.

Ascent: “Ascent” begins with resolute music, capturing the climber’s determination. We hear fanciful “Alpine” effects—perhaps the crunch of snow underfoot or the distant echo of mountaineers’ voices. A storm scene adds drama and intensity, mirroring the challenges faced during the climb.

Attainment: Finally, we reach the summit in “Attainment.” The joy of achievement bursts forth in unrestrained terms. The summit vista unfolds—a breathtaking panorama of triumph and fulfillment. The music soars, celebrating the climber’s victory over adversity.

“High Peak” stands as a testament to Eric Ball’s ability to capture landscapes, emotions, and human endeavor through music. Its majestic themes continue to inspire both performers and audiences, inviting us to ascend our own metaphorical peaks.
