Swithland Wood Bluebell Service

7th May 2023: 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

The bluebell is amongst the most loved of British flowers so it seems appropriate that a special service is dedicated to the wildflower each spring. It takes place at Swithland Wood in Charnwood Forest in Leciestershire, which is open to the public during daylight hours all year round. The outdoor Service has been taking place annually for over 100 years with only a handful of exceptions, and it is situated in he Pit, an amphitheatre deep in the woods. Expect prayers and appropriate hymns – occasionally the bluebell season is either very early or late depending upon climatic conditions, so sometimes the blooms are in short supply on the day, though the woods will often be carpeted with flowers. It’s organised by Swithland Church and has a popular regular following; cakes are on offer afterwards back at the church.

Park in the carpark on the north side of the wood (pay & display, £1 for 3 hours on 2019) and follow the signs for the service – the walk takes about half an hour or a bit less, and the service just over half-an-hour or so. Dogs are welcome, and many visitors take picnic chairs.

The best area for the wild bluebells is nearer the South car park.
